About this wine

Character

A bright-fruited, lively Chenin Blanc that seems playful at first and then reveals itself as deep and complex. The nose is fragrant: yellow and red apples, quince and pear flesh and skin, backed by a hint of wax and quince fuzz. Vinified dry, 12.5% vol.

Terroir and origin

Le Haut-Lieu lies on the Vouvray plateau and is the vineyard from which the estate grew: in 1928 the Huet family first came to the village and acquired the property along with this then five-hectare site. The topsoil, locally called aubuis, consists of deep brown clay with some flint and chalk. Four metres below lies the bedrock of yellow tuffeau limestone.

Grape variety and vinification

Pure Chenin Blanc, known on the Loire as the grape of moonlight. Ageing takes place in neutral vessels in the estate's deep rock cellars, which maintain a constant temperature. Since 2020, cellar master Benjamin Joliveau, a native of Vouvray, has been responsible for the wines.

On the palate

Fresh, mineral, crystal-clear. Ripe apples and pears meet blond tobacco and a touch of grain. A fine thread of acidity and a saline note carry the wine, which stays juicy while feeling airy. Pure and fine on the finish.

Highlights

Gaston Huet already converted the estate to biodynamic farming in the late 1980s; the entire domaine has been Demeter-certified since 1993. Depending on the vintage, each site can yield up to four bottlings: Sec, Demi-Sec, Moelleux and, in exceptional years, Moelleux 1ère Trie. Whether botrytis develops is decided by the weather. The house's wines are built to age for decades.
