About this wine
Character
Les Caillasses Brut Millésime 2018 is a single-vineyard vintage champagne from the terroir of Vincelles, complex, mature and decidedly food-friendly. The nose opens fine and expressive: ripe yellow pome and stone fruit, lemon, dried fig, freshly baked brioche, along with a touch of smoke and a chalky, stony minerality. The long ageing on lees shows in creamy, tender notes and a subtly oxidative streak, without the champagne losing any of its freshness.
Terroir and origin
Vincelles lies on the southern bank of the Marne, around 20 kilometres west of Épernay. The south- and southwest-facing vineyards sit on chalk, clay and marl, marked by loam, limestone and limonite. The Blin family has grown vines here since 1671; Jérôme Blin took over in 2007 and began the conversion in 2012. Two Comtois draft horses now plough his six hectares, while a sheep keeps the grass between the rows in check.
Grape variety and vinification
50% Pinot Meunier and 50% Chardonnay from vines averaging around 48 years old. Hand-harvested, spontaneous fermentation in stainless steel tanks and used red wine barrels, neither fined nor filtered. Tirage took place in April 2019, after which the champagne spent around seven years on the lees before being disgorged in April 2026. 12.0% vol.
On the palate
Dry, dense and powerful. Lemon and bitter zest meet biscuit, bread crust and tender pome fruit. The mousse feels a touch less refined than the aromatics but integrates well into the powerful structure. The wine gains breadth and creaminess in the middle before acidity, salt and chalky minerality draw it tight again. The juicy fruit of the Meunier and the more precise structure of the Chardonnay complement one another.
Food pairing recommendations
With oysters, scallops and sashimi, as well as turbot or aged Comté.
Special features
Each parcel is vinified separately, with Les Caillasses coming from stony soils. In the vineyard, Jérôme Blin farms biodynamically, without herbicides or synthetic fertilisers.
