About this wine

Character

This Chardonnay shows no padding: taut, chalky, with vibrant acidity. Pierre Larmandier, who took over the estate in 1982 at eighteen after his father's sudden death, places provenance above opulence. In magnum format, the champagne ages more slowly, and the 2015 still has years ahead of it.

Terroir and origin

Avize is one of the Grand Cru communes of the Côte des Blancs. Larmandier-Bernier farms 16 hectares across 17 parcels, from Vertus in Premier Cru to the Grand Crus of Cramant, Chouilly, Oger and Avize. The soil is pure chalk, giving the wine the minerality that Pierre Larmandier describes as wet chalk.

Grape variety and vinification

Chardonnay, 100%. The estate has worked without herbicides since 1992, and fully biodynamically since 1999, making it one of the first biodynamic estates in Champagne. Fermentation is spontaneous with natural yeasts, with no filtration and no fining. Ageing takes place in large barrels from the Austrian cooperage Stockinger, which lend structure without overwhelming the wine. The dosage is a maximum of four grams per litre, here as extra brut.

On the palate

Citrus peel, green apple and white blossom, followed by brioche from lees ageing. The wine stays linear throughout, with a saline, chalky finish free of sweetness.

Food pairings

Oysters, grilled scallops, sole in butter or turbot ceviche; also sashimi and aged Comté.

Special features

12.5% vol. in the 1.5-litre magnum. The bottles arrive without a capsule. Since 2017, Arthur Larmandier has worked at the estate, which his father runs together with Sophie Larmandier.
