About this wine
Character
A Priorat built on tension and clarity rather than power. The nose is dark and Mediterranean: tomato, rosemary and basil, alongside dark plum, almond blossom, rose petal and leather. After some swirling, mandarin peel, redcurrant and sloe emerge.
Terroir and origin
The label reads "Vi d'altura", Catalan for wine from altitude. The plot measures 1.5 hectares and lies at the northern edge of Priorat at the foot of Montsant mountain, at around 800 metres above sea level. There, the 70- to 75-year-old vines grow on a plateau of clay and loam.
Grape variety and vinification
Pure Grenache, more precisely the Garnacha Peluda mutation, whose berries carry a light fuzz. Since 2009, Dominik Huber has worked with whole-cluster infusion rather than extraction; punch-downs are no longer carried out. Since the 2016 vintage, no wood has been used for the Les Manyes: ageing takes place 100% in concrete tank.
On the palate
Meaty, almost bloody on the attack, followed by a very present, fine-grained tannin. Sour cherry, mandarin and floral notes lead the way; the acid structure carries the wine far, the finish stays bright-fruited and clear.
Food pairings
Entrecôte with rosemary potatoes and Mediterranean roasted vegetables. Also coq au vin with red wine onions and raw shaved button mushrooms.
Special features
15 hectares farmed organically and biodynamically, with Tatjana Peceric as head winemaker for vineyard and winemaking. The 2016 vintage of Les Manyes was the very first Spanish wine ever to be awarded 100 points by the Wine Advocate. Huber himself calls the Les Manyes the best wine Terroir al Limit has made to date. 14.5% vol., dry.
