About this wine
Character
A red wine of slender build and clear definition. At 13.0% vol. it remains dry and coolly drawn, with the fruit stepping back behind structure and spice. This is precisely the Zehnthof signature.
Terroir and origin
The Maustal is a VDP.Grosse Lage, a steep south-facing slope directly on the Main river in Sulzfeld. The shell limestone shapes the wine's cool, taut character. The Zehnthof Luckert estate has been a VDP member since 1955 and has worked under Naturland certification for over ten years.
Grape variety and vinification
Pure Pinot Noir (Spätburgunder). Cellar master Philipp Luckert, trained under Paul Fürst in Bürgstadt, ferments spontaneously with natural yeasts and ages the wine in traditional large oak casks from the Spessart forest, unfiltered and with minimal sulphur. The large cask format lends structure without laying wood aromas over the fruit.
On the palate
Cherry and forest berries, followed by a smoky spice. The wine is dense, the tannin supple, the acidity fine and well-carried.
Food pairings
With pink-roasted duck breast, roast pheasant and braised veal cheeks. Equally with wild boar ragù with forest mushrooms or aged Comté.
Special features
The wines are made in the prince-bishop's Zehnthof dating from 1558. The estate was named Winery of the Year 2025 by VINUM and has held five Eichelmann stars continuously since 2016.
