About this wine
Character
A cool, austere white wine that draws its impact from texture and salt. The fruit recedes, and the line stays the same from entry to finish. A wine that leaves plenty of room for its food companions.
Terroir and origin
Domaine Luneau-Papin is based in Le Landreau in Muscadet Sèvre et Maine. Pierre-Marie Luneau, ninth generation of the family estate, farms almost 30 hectares biodynamically together with his wife Marie. The area's subsoil is a patchwork of geological formations; granite, schist and gneiss show through in the estate's single-vineyard wines, since Melon de Bourgogne absorbs whatever the soil gives it.
Grape variety and vinification
Melon de Bourgogne, vinified dry, 12.5% vol. The ageing follows the house's signature style: extended time on fine lees in enamelled concrete tanks, without racking, without adding sulphur until bottling. This lends richness and grip where fruit would otherwise stand.
On the palate
On the nose, wet stone and flint, alongside acacia, apple and almond blossom, chopped almonds, a hint of almond brioche, meadow flowers, hay and shortcrust pastry; peach, lychee, pineapple and mirabelle plum remain in the background. The entry is cool and clear, stony and precise, with a saline pull and fine acidity.
Food pairing recommendations
With scallop carpaccio with wakame seaweed salad and lemon gel, with leek terrine with skate wing and lollo rosso, raspberry vinegar dressing, or in a vegetarian version with grilled peach with broad beans, feta and toasted slivered almonds.
Special features
The estate has farmed organically since 2008 and biodynamically since 2014; Demeter and Biodyvin certification followed in 2019, with the Demeter logo now featured on the label. In 2015, Wine & Spirits named the estate "International Winery of the Year".
