About this wine
Character
The Malvasia delle Lipari DOC Passito 2023 is a luscious white wine from the Aeolian island of Lipari, bringing together dense dried fruit and saline freshness. It comes across as concentrated without ever feeling heavy.
Terroir and origin
The vines grow on the Piana di Castellaro at 350 metres above sea level. Three volcanic rocks shape the soil: pumice for elegance, obsidian for mineral sharpness, kaolin for creamy fullness. Between volcanic heat and sea breezes, indigenous varieties ripen here. Massimo Lentsch and Stefania Frattolillo discovered these slopes in 2005 while out on a walk, and today farm 24 hectares organically, with production deliberately limited to 70,000 bottles a year.
Grape variety and vinification
Malvasia delle Lipari and Corinto Nero, an almost extinct variety also known as Corinthiaki. The vines are trained in the alberello system, free-standing without wire trellising, on terraces accessible only on foot, meaning entirely manual work. In the bioclimatic cellar, processing relies exclusively on gravity; since 2016 winemaker Emiliano Falsini has overseen the vinification.
On the palate
On the nose, dried figs, dates, honey, caramel and milk coffee, underpinned by a clear citrus freshness and a saline streak. On the palate, generous sweetness, salinity and refreshing acidity meet, carried by 14.5% vol.
Food pairing recommendations
With savoury dishes and desserts with caramel or chocolate.
Special features
Certified organic cultivation on Lipari's volcanic soils, alberello training as individual staked vines, bottled in the 375 ml format.
