About this wine
Character
Freshness and drinkability define this red wine from Lipari. Soft tannins, lively acidity and a spiciness of Mediterranean herbs keep it light and easy-drinking, without ever feeling heavy.
Terroir and origin
The vines grow at 350 metres above sea level on volcanic, sandy soil. Pumice, obsidian and kaolin define the terroir of the 24 hectares that Massimo Lentsch and Stefania Frattolillo have farmed organically since 2005. The vines are trained as free-standing bush vines (alberello), without wire trellising, on terraces accessible only on foot — entirely manual work.
Grape variety and vinification
Corinto Nero, an almost extinct variety originating in Greece, forms the cuvée together with Nero d'Avola. The destemmed grapes ferment for ten days in French barriques, with the cap punched down several times. Malolactic fermentation takes place in 500-litre casks, and after one year the wine is bottled unfiltered and unfined. 13.0% vol., dry.
On the palate
On the nose, sour cherry, blueberry and violet, alongside rosemary, thyme, juniper and a fine note of pepper — a bouquet that shifts between coolness and warmth. The palate is equally fruit-forward and refreshing: soft tannins, invigorating spice, and a saline streak that runs animatedly across the tongue.
Food pairings
Sun-dried tomatoes with Grana Padano and olives as a vegetarian starter, paired with grilled sea bream with anchovies, cherry tomatoes, herbs, olives and olive oil.
Special features
Tenuta di Castellaro is organically certified and deliberately bottles only 70,000 bottles per year. The bioclimatic cellar works exclusively by gravity, and since 2016 winemaker Emiliano Falsini has overseen the vinification.
