About this wine

Character

A Pinot Noir of slender build yet with real depth: silky tannin, fine austerity and the salty, mineral pull that defines the reds of Domaine Bruno Clair. At 13.0% vol. it stays light-footed without ever feeling thin, and gains complexity with age.

Terroir and origin

Marsannay lies at the northern edge of the Côte de Nuits, and Marsannay-la-Côte is home to the estate. It was here, in 1919, that the marriage of Joseph Clair and Marguerite Daü united the vineyards of both families; in 1986 Bruno Clair founded his own estate, which today farms 27 hectares across eight villages of the Côte d'Or and fills 32 appellations. The Les Longeroies vineyard sits on limestone and clay subsoil.

Grape variety and vinification

Pinot Noir, spontaneously fermented, with 20 to 50 percent whole clusters in the fermentation vat and measured extraction. This is followed by 18 to 20 months in barrique, with 20 to 50 percent new oak. Clarification happens naturally over time: the wines rest long enough to be bottled without fining or filtration.

On the palate

Cherry and raspberry, along with violet and an earthy, spicy note. The wine is dry, the acidity vibrant, the tannin fine; the finish stays mineral and long.

Food pairings

Grilled poultry, veal medallions with herbs, coq au vin or boeuf bourguignon, as well as mushroom risotto and charcuterie. For cheese, a ripe Époisses or Comté pairs beautifully.

Special features

The sixth generation is now involved: Edouard since 2010 in the vineyard and vinification, Arthur since 2018 in cellar ageing, Margaux in shipping and logistics. Cover cropping and the avoidance of herbicides have long been standard practice, and sulphur use continues to decline.
