About this wine
Character
A Chardonnay of crystalline minerality and vibrant energy. Nothing about it is smoothed over: the tension comes from consistent reduction during ageing, the length from a saline, almost austere depth. A Premier Cru that favours transparency over polish.
Terroir and origin
The grapes grow in the Premier Cru vineyard Charmes in Meursault, on the Côte de Beaune. Pierre-Henri Rougeot farms 12.6 hectares in Meursault, Volnay and Pommard, a holding his grandfather Hubert expanded in the 1960s. Work is done by hand and biodynamically, with minimal use of tractors. His credo: "There can be no good wine from bad soil."
Grape variety and vinification
Pure Chardonnay. Fermentation starts spontaneously with the estate's own yeasts, ageing takes place in 228-litre Burgundy barrels with a low proportion of new oak, without bâtonnage. Sans Sulfite Ajouté means no sulphur is added throughout ageing. The wine is bottled unfined and unfiltered, in 18th-century cellars once built for the Hospices de Beaune. 14.0% vol.
On the palate
Ripe lemon, yellow apple and delicate brioche over a cool minerality. The wine is densely and tautly built, the acidity gripping, the finish reductive, long and carried by saline depth.
Food pairings
With pan-seared scallops, lobster with butter sauce, turbot with lemon butter or Bresse chicken in cream sauce.
Special features
In 2016, Pierre-Henri Rougeot ended the estate's supermarket business and refocused it on quality wines; recurring premox in certain parcels was the deciding factor for going organic. The diagonally striped labels identify his cuvées aged without sulphur.
