About this wine
Character
A youthful Pinot Noir with clear red fruit, a floral top note and firm tannin. Power and nonchalance sit close together here: the wine has extract and drive, yet carries both without heaviness. It already drinks well now, and a few years of bottle age will let the youthful edges soften.
Terroir and origin
Les Vignes-Rondes lies mid-slope above the village of Monthelie, on the limestone-clay soils typical of the site. The exposure is cool, and it shows in the fruit. Domaine Rémi Jobard is based in Meursault and tends its rows by hand: cover-cropped, unfertilized, free of synthetic fertilizers and pesticides since 1994, and free of herbicides since 1998. Cordon pruning keeps yields low.
Grape variety and vinification
Hand-harvested Pinot Noir. About 80% of the grapes go into fermentation as whole clusters, the rest is destemmed. Fermentation is spontaneous with native yeasts, extraction gentle through pigeage and pumpovers. This is followed by around twelve months of aging in French oak barrels, about a quarter of them new. Bottling is unfiltered and with minimal sulfur.
On the palate
Transparent, powerful ruby red. On the nose, fresh raspberries and cherries, along with hollyhocks, subtle oak spice, vetiver and sandalwood, thyme and savory. The palate entry is dark-fruited and rich in extract, with a juicy bite and firm texture; the meaty tannins are almost chewable. Plenty of depth, plenty of drive, everything still young.
Special features
The high proportion of whole clusters explains this wine's floral, herb-spiced side. 13.5% vol., dry, unfiltered and bottled with minimal sulfur.
