About this wine
Character
A dry Muscat from Alsace that ties its fragrance to a chalky structure. On the nose, fresh grapes, elderflower and rose petals, alongside lemongrass; on the palate it stays lean and focused, at 12.0% ABV.
Terroir and origin
Goldert is one of six Grand Cru sites farmed by Domaine Zind-Humbrecht across a total of 11.5 hectares; the limestone-rich soil here lends finesse. The estate, based in Turckheim, spans 42 hectares, with yields kept to 30 to 40 hectolitres per hectare. Olivier Humbrecht converted the first five hectares to biodynamic farming in 1996; on the steepest slopes, reaching up to 45 degrees, the Jura draft horse Nikita pulls the plough.
Grape variety and vinification
Muscat, vinified consistently dry. As with all the estate's wines, it rests on its lees for at least six months, and no wine leaves the cellar before one to two years of ageing. This lends depth to the texture without dampening the variety's characteristic perfume.
On the palate
Dry and taut. Grapefruit and green apple carry the vibrant acidity, underpinned by a cool, chalky minerality and a touch of white pepper. The finish is long and saline, with citrus zest and bitter almond.
Food pairings
As an aperitif, with asparagus and hollandaise sauce, with sushi and sashimi, with goat cheese and fresh herbs, and with lightly spiced Asian dishes featuring lemongrass and coriander.
Highlights
The magnum format slows ageing and preserves the floral freshness for longer. Olivier Humbrecht, the first Frenchman to become a Master of Wine and president of Biodyvin, runs an estate whose family has been making wine since 1620; since 2019, Pierre Émile Humbrecht has joined as the eleventh generation.
