About this wine
Character
The Octave zero dosage 2022 is a vintage champagne made from pure Chardonnay, bottled without dosage. With no residual sugar to cushion it, the wine rests on acidity, salinity and fruit, holding that tension from the first sip through to the finish.
Terroir and origin
Vincelles lies on the southern bank of the Marne, about 20 kilometres west of Épernay. The Blin family has been growing vines here since 1671, today across six hectares spread over numerous lieux-dits of clay, limestone, sand and flint. Each parcel is vinified separately, and each champagne comes from a single site.
Grape variety and vinification
Chardonnay stands alone here, even though 70 percent of the vineyard area is planted with Pinot Meunier. Fermentation proceeds spontaneously with wild yeasts, after which the wine ages on the lees. No sugar is added: zero dosage, meaning without any dosage liqueur, at 12.0 percent alcohol.
On the palate
On the nose, green apple, lemon zest and white peach, followed by a cool flinty note and a fine yeasty spice. On the palate the wine stays taut and focused, the acidity cuts through, the perlage remains fine, and the finish is saline.
Distinctive features
In 2007 Jérôme Blin took over a conventionally run estate; in 2012 he converted to organic farming, followed by biodynamic certification in 2018. Tractors have since disappeared: the Comtois draft horses Naya and Quartz plough the rows, while the sheep Chouquette keeps the grass short.
