About this wine

Character

This Riesling draws its impact not from weight but from tension: 9.5% ABV, under 1 g/l residual sugar, 7.2 g/l acidity. Slender and racy, with a herbal freshness that keeps the palate cool for minutes.

Terroir and origin

The vines for this wine don't stand in the Wachenheimer Odinstal monopole site, 350 metres above the Rhine valley, but down in the valley on sandy and loamy soils. September 2022 brought enormous rainfall there, 110 litres per square metre by the end of the month. The grapes soaked up the water, every ripe berry rotted away, and harvest became a selection effort of enormous scale.

Grape variety and vinification

Pure Riesling, fermented in stainless steel, with 5% whole clusters, a stylistic device Andreas Schumann turns to fairly often. Filtered through cellulose in August, lightly sulphured before bottling.

On the palate

On the nose it initially comes across as wild and untamed, oscillating between yellow and green tones: fennel pollen, ginger honey, candied ginger, unripe papaya, freshly cut persimmon, plus lime, bergamot, kaffir lime, coriander and fennel seed, a touch of pea and artichoke, and finally nettle, lemon thyme, mint and lemon balm. On the palate this freshness lingers, light-footed yet structured with a gentle texture. The phenols provide backbone, the bitter notes repeatedly challenge the delicate fruit: not candy-like coolness, but a fresh herbal extract.

Food pairings

Spinach dumplings in buttermilk sauce, chilled cucumber soup with Arctic shrimp and crème fraîche, and autumn salad with red cabbage, apple and roasted onions.

Special features

Odinstal has farmed biodynamically since 2006 and has been Demeter-certified since 2013, with the Demeter logo on the label. In the cellar, Andreas Schumann follows a non-intervention approach with extended lees ageing and minimal use of sulphur. Bottled in the 1500 ml magnum.
