About this wine
Character
A bone-dry Riesling in which the origin speaks louder than any winemaker's signature: smoky minerality, cool structure, density and length. Andreas Schumann vinifies the parcels identically, so that the soil makes the difference.
Terroir and origin
The Wachenheimer Odinstal monopole vineyard lies 350 metres above the Rhine valley, a hollow enclosed by ten hectares of mixed forest with no viticultural neighbours. Across five hectares, four rock types sit side by side: basalt from the Pechsteinkopf, shell limestone, Keuper marl and yellow variegated sandstone, a result of the faults of the Rhine rift valley. The vines here ripen 20 days later than in the valley.
Grape variety and vinification
Riesling is the estate's main grape variety. In the cellar, the principle of non-intervention applies: spontaneous fermentation without temperature control, extended lees ageing, minimal use of sulphur. The wines become as dry as they want to be. Since 2013 the VDP estate has been Demeter-certified; five suckler cows graze among the vines, and bees pollinate the meadows. 12.0% vol.
On the palate
Pale yellow with golden reflections. On the nose, lemon, green apple and a hint of white blossom, underpinned by smoky minerality. The palate opens dense and powerful, the acidity crisp and precise, the finish saline and long.
Food pairing
Pan-fried sea fish with herbs, pale veal, mushroom dishes and aged hard cheese. Tangy, spiced soups and boldly seasoned vegetables from Asian cuisine also pair well with its taut structure.
Special features
The double-magnum of 3000 ml, bottled by the Odinstal estate on Odinstalweg in Wachenheim. The label bears the Demeter logo.
