About this wine
Character
A dry white wine made from Zibibbo that shows two sides: exuberant fruit on the nose, cool spice on the palate. In the glass, a bright lemon yellow with distinct green highlights. The nose opens with mango, passion fruit and watermelon, joined by floral notes of rose and, beneath, bitter citrus peel and grapefruit. An inviting wine full of expression and vitality.
Terroir and origin
Zibibbo thrives on the volcanic island of Pantelleria under extreme conditions. The island has belonged to the estate since 1984 and is now farmed by Sebastiano de Bartoli. The family's cellar is located in the Contrada Fornara Samperi near Marsala, where Marco de Bartoli began in 1978.
Grape variety and vinification
Zibibbo, also known as Muscat of Alexandria. The family farms 30 hectares organically, harvests exclusively by hand and works with native yeasts. 3,500 vines per hectare are trained in the traditional bush vine (alberello) or Guyot system. The wine is dry and reaches 12.5% vol.
On the palate
Vibrant acidity carries the wine, while a saline trace and cool, stony nuances keep the exotic fruit in check. Fine tannin lends a slender structure and keeps the finish dry.
Distinctive features
On Pantelleria, Zibibbo is best known as the grape behind sweet passito wines; the Pietranera shows the variety fermented dry. Pushing boundaries has long been a tradition at this estate: between 1995 and 2000 the winery was closed because the authorities refused to classify an 18-percent-alcohol wine as wine. Today Renato, Sebastiano and Giuseppina de Bartoli carry on the work of the former racing driver.
