About this wine

Character

A lusciously sweet Pinot Gris of essence-like density. The sweetness is concentrated and multilayered, yet remains dynamic thanks to the acidity and salinity that counterbalance it. 12.3% vol. in the 375 ml bottle.

Terroir and origin

The Altenbourg is a gently sloping vineyard near Kientzheim at 225 to 250 metres, directly below the Grand Cru Furstentum. Limestone and sedimentary deposits define the soils here, which are noticeably sandier than elsewhere. Pinot Gris and Gewürztraminer ripen slowly, which benefits the Vendanges Tardives and Sélection de Grains Nobles wines from this site.

Grape variety and vinification

Pinot Gris, made in a lusciously sweet style. Le Tri refers to the hand selection of individual botrytis-affected berries. Maurice and Jacky Barthelmé, the two brothers-in-law from Wettolsheim, have farmed their 25 hectares biodynamically since 1997 and only produce this style of sweet wine in vintages that allow it.

On the palate

First the sweet fruit, then a sweetness of great concentration and depth. A salt-tinged minerality and fine acidity carry the wine's length, with a finish that seems endless. On the nose beforehand: liquid honey, candied quince, caramelized pears, dried apple slices, white nougat and vanilla pulp.

Food pairing suggestions

First on its own. Otherwise with poultry and non-force-fed goose liver, with blue-veined cheese, quince sorbet, fruit and nuts or pome fruit, also with fruity desserts.

Special features

The Barthelmés farm vines across six Grand Cru sites, spread over nearly a hundred parcels; on the steepest slopes they work with horses instead of tractors. In 2012 they were named "Winemakers of the Year".
