About this wine
Character
A lusciously sweet wine whose concentration doesn't come at the cost of weight: 9.5% ABV keeps it nimble, while the selection of berries gives it depth. At present it shows youthful and raw, with plenty of ageing potential ahead.
Terroir and origin
The grapes grow in Clos Jebsal, a single vineyard site of Domaine Zind-Humbrecht in Alsace. There they ripen early, which makes selecting the berries easier and the harvest less dependent on the weather. It's precisely this selection that makes the wine balanced and delicate rather than merely sweet.
Grape variety and vinification
Pure Pinot Gris. Olivier Humbrecht, the first Frenchman to hold the title of Master of Wine, converted the first five hectares to biodynamic farming in 1996 and today farms 42 hectares according to these principles, once again using horses on the steepest plots. Yields range from 30 to 40 hectolitres per hectare, and the wines spend at least six months on the lees and one to two years in the cellar before leaving the estate.
On the palate
The interplay of sweetness and acidity carries the wine: juicy fruit, liquid blossom honey and invigorating herbal notes, with the minerality from the nose still present in the background. The finish stays long and fresh.
Food pairings
With robust blue cheese, with foie gras, or with fruity desserts featuring pear and almond.
Special features
Sélection de Grains Nobles means the harvest of individually selected botrytized berries, hence the necessarily small quantity and the resulting half bottle of 375ml. The Humbrecht family has been making wine since 1620, and since 2019 Pierre Émile Humbrecht has been working alongside them as the eleventh generation.
