About this wine

Character

This wine does two things at once. It fills the nose with tarte Tatin, baked quince, sourdough bread and buttery streusel, while staying cool and linear. The radiant golden yellow in the glass promises richness, yet the wine itself shows an austere frame.

Terroir and origin

Clos Windsbuhl is a monopole vineyard of Domaine Zind-Humbrecht in Alsace, where the Humbrecht family has been making wine since 1620. Olivier Humbrecht, the first Frenchman to hold the title of Master of Wine, farms 42 hectares and keeps yields at 30 to 40 hectolitres per hectare. On the steepest parcels, horses are back at work.

Grape variety and vinification

100 percent Pinot Gris. The wine rests on its lees for at least six months, which gives it its texture, and leaves the cellar only after one to two years of ageing. 14.0% ABV, off-dry — a residual sweetness that barely reads as sweet.

On the palate

A taut framework of acidity, fruit and finesse. Stony and austere, with a minerality that works coolly against candied orange and lemon zest, mango and dried figs. The drinkability barely lets the fruit settle, and the finish lingers for minutes, turning the aromas in circles.

Food pairing recommendations

With pan-seared veal sweetbreads, morel cream sauce and Jerusalem artichoke mash, with a Maldivian fish curry with pineapple, root vegetables and basmati rice, or with a selection of raw-milk cheeses, fruit bread and dried apricots.

Special features

Olivier Humbrecht converted the first five hectares to biodynamic farming in 1996; he calls it a "therapy to help the vines forget stress." Since 2019, Pierre Émile Humbrecht has been working at the estate as the eleventh generation.
