About this wine
Character
A noble sweet Pinot Gris from Alsace, grown in the Clos Windsbuhl, the Domaine Zind-Humbrecht's monopole vineyard. The nose reveals liquid forest honey, candied orange peel and roasted almonds, a dessert in the glass before the first sip is even taken. Sparkling amber in the glass.
Terroir and origin
The Clos Windsbuhl belongs to the Domaine alone. Olivier Humbrecht, the first Frenchman to hold the title of Master of Wine, farms 42 hectares in Alsace; the Humbrecht family has been making wine since 1620, and since 2019 Pierre Émile Humbrecht has joined as the eleventh generation. Yields stand at 30 to 40 hectolitres per hectare.
Grape variety and vinification
Pure varietal Pinot Gris, harvested as Sélection de Grains Nobles in its own dedicated Trie Speciale. The estate farms biodynamically; in 1996 Olivier Humbrecht converted the first five hectares, and horses once again work the steepest plots. The wines rest at least six months on the lees and don't leave the cellar before one to two years of ageing.
On the palate
Opulent, concentrated and silky, without heaviness. Refreshing citrus notes in the long finish give the sweetness play and nuance, and the low alcohol content of 6.5% ABV supports this lightness.
Food pairings
Poultry and non-forced foie gras, to finish tarts and cakes, as well as washed-rind soft cheeses.
Special features
A Trockenbeerenauslese from the 2005 vintage with an unusual equation: maximum concentration at just 6.5% ABV, from a site farmed by this estate alone.
