About this wine

Character

A dry Pinot Gris with many layers of aromas and textures that comes across as neither demure nor overbearing, but settled within itself. Fruit, spice and its excursions into pastry all stay firmly in place within a silky, elegant structure.

Terroir and origin

The Grand Cru site Furstentum in Kientzheim was first mentioned in 1330. The Pinot Gris vines grow there on south-facing limestone slopes, with vine age of at least 25 years. Maurice and Jacky Barthelmé, brothers-in-law, share cellar and vineyard and have farmed their 25 hectares in Wettolsheim biodynamically since 1997. Furstentum is one of the estate's six Grand Cru sites.

Grape variety and vinification

Pinot Gris, vinified and aged entirely in stainless steel tank. 3 g/l residual sugar stands against 4.5 g/l acidity. The 2019 vintage began in a complex fashion and found balance over the course of the summer: brilliant, generous wines with a pronounced acid structure.

On the palate

The nose is initially restrained, then opens up in depth: candied quince, candied ginger, caramelised pear and dried apricot, followed by toasted almonds, biscuit dough and caramelised apples, flint and cold smoke, later artichoke, fennel and yellow carrots, spiced with cardamom, cinnamon and clove. Despite this intensity, there is no trace of sweetness. The palate carries the aromatics through with precision, and with moderate acidity produces length and quiet grandeur.

Food pairings

Oven-roasted fennel with orange sauce, artichoke bottoms with melted goat cheese and tomato chutney, or skin-grilled miso salmon with grated ginger.

Notable features

The estate's vineyards are spread across nearly a hundred parcels; on the steepest slopes, the Barthelmés work with horses instead of tractors. In 2012 they were named "Winemakers of the Year".
