About this wine

Character

A luscious sweet Pinot Gris whose concentration doesn't come from weight: 7.0 % ABV lets the fruit take the lead. Honey, dried apricot and candied orange zest define the nose, with a sweetness that reads more like reduced fruit than sugar.

Terroir and origin

The Furstentum is one of the six Grand Cru sites farmed by Domaine Albert Mann out of Wettolsheim; the subsoil is limestone. Maurice and Jacky Barthelmé, brothers-in-law, have farmed 25 hectares biodynamically since 1997, spread across nearly a hundred parcels. On the steepest slopes, horses replace tractors so the soil isn't compacted and the roots can dig deeper.

Grape variety and vinification

Pure Pinot Gris, harvested as Le Tri, meaning by selection: only botrytised berries were picked. Sweet wines like this are made at the estate only in vintages where the grapes allow it. Nothing is forced; the team observes and responds.

On the palate

Dense and clear at once: quince compote and bitter orange, alongside a saline minerality and an acidity that cuts through the sweetness and keeps it from feeling cloying. The finish is long and carries beeswax.

Food pairings

Roquefort, foie gras on brioche, apricot tart with almond butter or dried figs after a long meal.

Special features

The 375 ml bottle suits the format of this wine: a glass after dinner. Sweet wines like this can age for decades. In 2012, the Barthelmés were named "Winemakers of the Year." Maurice runs the cellar, Jacky the vineyards, and son Antoine now works alongside them.
