About this wine
Character
A white wine with cool tension. On the nose, first young pear, peach and grapefruit, then, after sufficient aeration, fine notes of flint and smoke along with pale tobacco. An aristocratic, energising start.
Terroir and origin
The vines stand in the upper part of the Heimbourg vineyard in Turckheim, facing west on a steep slope. The climate there is relatively cool, the site exposed to the valley winds. The Oligocene limestone soil combines old oolitic pebbles cemented in an aggressive, iron-rich limestone of red colour. Its influence on the wine is immense.
Grape variety and vinification
Pinot Gris needs a strong terroir influence to produce great wines. In 2021 the yield was very low; the healthy grapes allowed the wine to ferment fully dry. In the domaine's cellar, each wine ages for one to two years, at least six months of that on the lees. 13.0% vol.
On the palate
An invigoratingly fresh start, the delicate fruit carried by refreshing acidity, the wine dry and with great drinkability. A magnificent arc of tension, behind which lies an ageing potential still to be discovered. Aerate and serve not too cold in large Burgundy glasses.
Food pairings
Grapefruit and avocado salad with coriander, peas, carrots and asparagus with crayfish in puff pastry, or veal sweetbreads with preserved lemon, baby turnips and black cumin.
