About this wine

Character

A Pinot Gris that draws its impact from structure rather than fruit. The nose stays dense and elusive at first; those who swirl and wait are rewarded with red apple, spice and nut shells, underpinned by a base of wet stone after warm summer rain.

Terroir and origin

The Heimbourg above Turckheim is one of Alsace's steeper sites: 7.5 hectares in total, 4.5 of which belong to the estate. The vines grow on limestone Oligocene bedrock, facing south to south-east. In the upper plots, where the Pinot Gris grows, late evening sun reaches the vines during the ripening period in August and September; the view takes in Clos Jebsal and Brand.

Grape variety and vinification

Pure varietal Pinot Gris from vines averaging 38 years old, with a yield of 52 hl/ha. 2023 was an excellent vintage for the Pinot varieties, producing exceptionally healthy, ripe grapes here. A long, even fermentation and ageing on full lees in young oak casks gave structure, density and clarity. Bottled in January 2025, 13.0% vol.

On the palate

The attack is remarkably taut. With just 0.6 g/l residual sugar, the wine plays entirely on extract rather than sugar or primary aromatics: a deep saline backbone, precise punch, a long-wave finish.

Food pairing recommendations

With veal sweetbreads with morels, foie gras mi-cuit, grilled turbot with beurre blanc or choucroute garnie. For cheese, pair with aged Comté and Munster.

Special features

Olivier Humbrecht, the first Frenchman to hold the title of Master of Wine, converted the estate's first five hectares to biodynamic farming back in 1996. No wine leaves the cellar before one to two years of ageing. This Heimbourg is a cellaring wine that rewards patience.
