About this wine
Character
A nobly sweet Pinot Gris that treats sweetness not as an end in itself, but as a counterpoint to spice. The nose is both spicy and sweet at once: dried fruit, honey and resin meet white pepper, galangal and cardamom, with delicate hints of cedarwood and tobacco box behind. Sparkling amber in the glass.
Terroir and origin
The Heimbourg vineyard faces west, offering ideal conditions for the development of noble rot, which was especially pronounced in 2005. Domaine Zind-Humbrecht in Turckheim farms 42 hectares biodynamically; the Humbrecht family have been winegrowers since 1620, Olivier Humbrecht was the first Frenchman to hold the title of Master of Wine, and since 2019 Pierre Émile Humbrecht has been working alongside as the eleventh generation.
Grape variety and vinification
Pinot Gris in its sweetest form: for a Sélection de Grains Nobles, only berries affected by botrytis and highly concentrated make it into the cellar. The estate's yields sit at 30 to 40 hectolitres per hectare, the wines spend at least six months on the lees and leave the cellar only after one to two years of ageing. Alcohol remains at 10.0% ABV.
On the palate
An interplay of concentrated sweetness and piquant spice, with apricot, white fruit, beeswax and the clear signature of noble rot. The high residual sugar is balanced by the alcohol content, and the finish lingers long.
Food pairing recommendations
Savoury dishes and desserts with a sweet edge suit it well: chocolate dessert, dried fruit with nuts or a robust blue-veined cheese.
Special features
A delicate Trockenbeerenauslese-style wine with exceptional ageing potential, bottled in the half-bottle format of 375 ml.
