About this wine

Character

A mature Pinot Gris in which spice and evolved notes take precedence over fruit. Layered, complex, with 14.0% vol. and a subtle residual sweetness that holds the structure together.

Terroir and origin

The Grand Cru Rangen de Thann rises above the small town of Thann and, at a 68-degree gradient, is Alsace's steepest vineyard site. Across 5.5 hectares of volcanic rock, wines of mineral intensity emerge here; the Clos Saint-Urbain has belonged to Domaine Zind-Humbrecht for decades. On the steepest plots, horses are once again doing the work.

Grape variety and vinification

Pure varietal Pinot Gris. Olivier Humbrecht, the first Frenchman to hold the title of Master of Wine, farms 42 hectares and converted the first five to biodynamic practice in 1996. Yields run between 30 and 40 hectolitres per hectare, the wines spend at least six months on the lees, and leave the cellar only after one to two years of ageing.

On the palate

The entry is viscous and spicy, with maturity announcing itself ahead of the fruit cascade, which proves remarkably restrained. The nose offers popcorn, candied apricot, date and candied lemon peel, followed by light tobacco, leather, mace, allspice, baked celery, Montélimar nougat and wet chalk. The candied notes remain a means, not the main point.

Food pairings

Braised chicory with caramelised nuts for the vegan option. Alongside it, smoked stockfish braised with dried apricots, bacon and sage as well as pork belly braised with black cardamom, milk and dried plums.

Notable facts

The Humbrecht family has been growing vines since 1620; since 2019, Pierre Émile Humbrecht has represented the eleventh generation working at the estate. The estate holds six Grand Cru sites across 11.5 hectares.
