About this wine
Character
The Pinot Gris Rangen de Thann Clos-Saint-Urbain Grand Cru 2020 is an off-dry white wine of great stature, grown on volcanic rock above the town of Thann. Power and spice stand against precise acidity, resulting in a wine that feels finely structured rather than broad. The 2020 is still only at the beginning of its development.
Terroir and origin
The Grand Cru Rangen de Thann drops away at a 68-degree gradient towards the old town of Thann and the Thur river, making it the steepest vineyard site in Alsace. On 5.5 hectares of volcanic rock, wines of mineral intensity are born here. The substrate of greywacke, compressed volcanic ash, gives them their flavour intensity and energy.
Grape variety and vinification
Pure varietal Pinot Gris. The wine ferments quickly; the 2020 was aged for 17 months in barrel on the lees, refining its powerful balance. Olivier Humbrecht, the first Frenchman to become a Master of Wine, converted the first five hectares to biodynamic farming back in 1996. Yields lie between 30 and 40 hectolitres per hectare, and horses work the steepest vineyards.
On the palate
On the nose, bitter orange, candied orange zest, dried apricots and candied ginger, alongside peach, pear and honeydew melon, plus cardamom, cinnamon and subtle hints of incense; smoky, flinty notes still remain in the background. On the palate, overripe pineapple, fruity sweetness with fine tannin, compact spice and pronounced acidity, along with a saline, crystalline structure and a very long finish.
Food pairings
Saffron risotto with green asparagus and crispy carrots, turbot with oriental spices, chickpeas, sea buckthorn and couscous, or charcoal-grilled pigeon with red lentils, pineapple and rum-lime cream.
Special features
13.5% vol. Be sure to decant now and drink from large Burgundy glasses; the wine continues to gain depth for a few days after opening. The Humbrecht family has been growing wine since 1620, and since 2019 Pierre Émile Humbrecht has been working at the estate as the eleventh generation.
