About this wine
Character
A dry-vinified Pinot Gris from Alsace that combines smoky, malty power with cool herbal spice. On the nose, beetroot, boxwood, pepper and roasted walnuts, along with a finely buttery, vanilla-tinged scent; with some aeration, vineyard peach and acacia blossom emerge.
Terroir and origin
The Rotenberg site faces west to northwest, sitting behind the Grand Cru Hengst and opening onto the Munster valley and the Vosges mountains. The vineyard ripens late and mostly carries varieties from the Pinot family. The poor, iron-rich red Oligocene limestone reduces the vines' vigour; yields remain very low.
Grape variety and vinification
Pinot Gris, fully fermented dry, 12.5% ABV. In the 2016 vintage, overripeness was easier to avoid, and fermentation with wild yeasts ran to completion. Domaine Zind-Humbrecht farms biodynamically; Olivier Humbrecht converted the first five hectares back in 1996.
On the palate
The opening is firm, saline and remarkably powerful. The mid-palate is expansive and forceful, cushioned by fine fruit and a charming sweetness that lets flashes of juniper and lavender shine through in the finish. The long finish feels cool and herbal.
Food pairings
Morel and kohlrabi tartlet with amontillado cream and pickled black walnuts; quail stuffed with veal sweetbreads, pea-mint cream, kohlrabi and tomato chutney; baked veal belly with wild garlic dumpling, asparagus and lemon-gin jus.
Special features
Rotenberg was once known for harmonious, rich, sweet wines. The natural concentration of the grapes there now also produces complex dry Pinot Gris. How this 2016 develops over the coming years remains an exciting question.
