About this wine
Character
A Pinot Gris defined by nerve rather than fullness. Citrus freshness, herbal spice and a saline base shape the profile; the wine ferments slowly and finishes dry at 12.5% vol.
Terroir and origin
The single vineyard Rotenberg de Wintzenheim lies on the western slope of the Grand Cru Hengst. The marl-limestone-sand bedrock is the same, but the soils are much shallower and very rich in iron. The iron gives the earth its deep red colour and lent the vineyard its name. The altitude and orientation towards the Vosges create a climate that allows for late ripening.
Grape variety and vinification
Pure varietal Pinot Gris from biodynamic farming. Olivier Humbrecht only allows harvesting after strict ripeness checks, so the grapes reach the cellar with ideal alcohol potential and full phenolic ripeness, ensuring fermentation reliably runs dry. The biodynamic work accelerates ripening of the skins and keeps alcohol levels low.
On the palate
On the nose, citrus fruits, lemon balm and bergamot, plenty of herbs, then juicy quince and apple, with bee honey and vanilla foam behind. Invigorating and upright, with a saline note and brilliant acidity that gives the wine bite. Long finish, very good ageing potential.
Food pairing recommendations
Mini artichokes with blood orange chutney, grilled lobster with ginger, aniseed and cardamom or veal pie with orange zest, tarragon, thyme and rosemary.
Distinctive features
The Rotenberg also produces noble-sweet wines; vinified dry, it shows an aromatic expression that is unusual for this otherwise rather neutral grape variety. Young, it needs several hours in the decanter and a sufficiently large glass, and it continues to gain expression for several days after opening.
