About this wine
Character
A concentrated sweet wine made from botrytised grapes, its opulence set against a lively, fresh acidity. In the glass, sparkling amber with a deep reddish shimmer, as the 2000 vintage shows after long ageing.
Terroir and origin
The Rotenberg sits on limestone- and iron-rich soil, which has given this vintage elegance and balanced acidity. Domaine Zind-Humbrecht in Turckheim farms 42 hectares; in 1996 Olivier Humbrecht converted the first five hectares to biodynamic farming. Yields run between 30 and 40 hectolitres per hectare, and on the steepest plots horses are once again used to work the land. The family has been growing wine since 1620.
Grape variety and vinification
Pinot Gris as a Sélection de Grains Nobles, meaning picked from grapes affected by noble rot. At least six months of lees contact shape the texture, and no wine from the estate leaves the cellar before one to two years of ageing. Alcohol stays at 11.5% ABV, with sweetness here carrying the concentration rather than the power.
On the palate
Dense and sweet, with liquid honey, candied fruit and tropical notes, including peach, quince and pear. A saline thread runs through the mid-palate, while the spices of ginger, cinnamon, clove and vanilla carry through into the long finish. Velvety, powerfully structured, with acidity keeping the richness in motion.
Food pairing recommendations
With fruit desserts and desserts in general, as well as blue cheese.
Special features
Olivier Humbrecht was the first Frenchman to hold the title of Master of Wine. This wine's excellent ageing potential has already been proven over more than two decades in the 2000 vintage.
