About this wine
Character
A lusciously sweet white wine from the Rotenberg site, whose concentration doesn't come from alcohol: 8.0% ABV stands opposite a dense, multi-layered wine. A contemplative drink that stands its ground as a soloist.
Terroir and origin
Domaine Zind-Humbrecht farms 42 hectares in Alsace and bottles in Turckheim. Olivier Humbrecht, the first Frenchman to hold the title of Master of Wine, converted the first five hectares to biodynamic farming in 1996. Horses once again work the steep sites, with yields of 30 to 40 hectolitres per hectare.
Grape variety and vinification
Pinot Gris at the Sélection de Grains Nobles level, meaning made from botrytized berries picked through selective harvesting. At least six months of lees contact give the estate's wines their texture; no wine leaves the cellar before one to two years of ageing.
On the palate
Amber with orange highlights in the glass. The nose brings together honeycomb, rusk, butterscotch, roasted nuts and burnt almonds, alongside dried apricots and the spice note of Aachen Printen. On the palate, the high residual sugar carries the wine, yet minerality and the crisp acidity of the 2008 vintage keep it in balance.
Food pairings
Hazelnut brioche with preserved figs and Stilton, pheasant confit with quince and walnuts, or carrot cake with hazelnut cream. Equally suited to game dishes and to desserts high in nuts.
Special features
The half bottle of 375 ml. The Humbrecht family has been growing wine since 1620, and since 2019 Pierre Émile Humbrecht has joined the estate as the eleventh generation.
