About this wine
Character
An Alsatian Pinot Noir that draws its impact from aroma and freshness rather than weight. Muted ruby red with cherry-red highlights, the nose is captivating and open: raspberry, morello cherry and redcurrant meet floral notes of violet, elderflower and rose. With air, undergrowth, vanilla, leather and cinnamon emerge.
Terroir and origin
The grapes come from various plots in Gueberschwihr and Eguisheim, on soils of marly limestone and marly sandstone. The vines are over 20 years old. The estate, based in Wettolsheim, farms 25 hectares spread across nearly a hundred plots; Jacky Barthelmé is responsible for the vineyards, Maurice Barthelmé for the cellar.
Grape variety and vinification
Pure Pinot Noir, hand-harvested. After an infusion, the wine ferments spontaneously in open vats using gravity, with 5 % whole clusters. It then ages for 17 months in barrique, one third each new oak, one-year-old and two-year-old wood. Unfined.
On the palate
Fresh and juicy, the acidity is lively, the tannins fine and polished. Dry at 13.0 % vol., highly drinkable and without any heaviness. Served lightly chilled, the fruit comes through most clearly.
Special features
Domaine Albert Mann has farmed biodynamically since 1997, using horses instead of tractors on the steepest plots so the soil isn't compacted and the roots can reach deeper. In 2012, the two brothers-in-law were named «Winemakers of the Year». Antoine, the son, now works alongside them. The house philosophy: force nothing, observe, respond.
