About this wine

Character

The Pinot Noir Clos de la Faille 2023 is a dry red wine from Alsace that feels cool, polished and gripping. In the glass, it opens with subtle reduction and animal nuances, a touch of tar and fermented notes of cardamom, tea and tobacco over dark berry fruit and Moroccan spices. The color is a transparent ruby red.

Terroir and origin

The vineyard is located in Wintzenheim and extends the Grand Cru Hengst; the site belongs solely to the Barthelmé family. The soil changes from top to bottom: first pebbles of pink Vosges sandstone and calcareous sandstone, in the middle grey limestone pebbles from the Muschelkalk with very fine grain from the yellow Jurassic, and at the bottom a mix of sandstone pebbles and white and pink quartz.

Grape variety and vinification

Pure Pinot Noir from 25-year-old vines, hand-harvested. Usually around 20% whole clusters go into open fermentation, aging takes place in small oak, also with around 20% new barriques. 13.0% vol., dry.

On the palate

The wine already rests within itself and has found its center: quiet, penetrating, with a still slightly cool, self-assured nonchalance. The cool, lightly tangy freshness is kept in balance by a very faint sweetness of extract, the tannin is silky, the oak stays fine and restrained. The proportion of whole clusters brings its own dynamic, the stature is impressive.

Distinctive features

Domaine Albert Mann in Wettolsheim is run by the brothers-in-law Maurice and Jacky Barthelmé, Maurice in the cellar, Jacky in the vineyards. They have farmed biodynamically since 1997, across 25 hectares split into nearly a hundred parcels, using horses instead of tractors on the steepest slopes. In 2012 they were named "Winemaker of the Year".
