About this wine

Character

A Pinot Noir with pure fruit, fine-grained tannin and plenty of inner tension. Pierre-Henri Rougeot steered the domaine away from his father Marc's supermarket-focused business in 2016 towards quality wines, and this Pommard shows where that journey has led: transparency over oak, drive over power.

Terroir and origin

The "Clos des Roses" is the domaine's monopole vineyard in Pommard on the Côte de Beaune and the pride of the house. The 12.6 hectares spread across Meursault, Volnay and Pommard include parcels added by grandfather Hubert in the 1960s; he served as mayor of Meursault for 25 years. Work is carried out biodynamically, entirely by hand in the vineyard, with only minimal use of tractors. Pierre-Henri Rougeot's credo: "There can be no good wine from bad soil."

Grape variety and vinification

Pinot Noir, unstemmed and fermented as whole clusters, with spontaneous fermentation using native yeasts. Ageing takes place in 18th-century cellars originally built for the Hospices de Beaune, in 228-litre Burgundy barrels with a low proportion of new oak. Throughout ageing the wine receives no addition of sulfur and is neither filtered nor fined. 13.0% ABV.

On the palate

Juicy and silky, with red forest berries and rose petals over an earthy spice note and a subtle reduction. The acidity carries the wine, the tannin stays fine-grained, and the finish is long and distinctly mineral.

Food pairings

With roasted duck breast, beef tenderloin or braised jugged hare, as well as with aged Comté.

Special features

Exclusive property of the domaine, bottled as a 1500 ml magnum. The diagonally striped labels identify the house's sulfur-free cuvées.
