About this wine
Character
A Pinot Noir that puts transparency before power: bright red fruit, taut structure, lively energy. Dry and lean at 13.0% ABV.
Terroir and origin
Clos des Roses is a monopole vineyard in Pommard on the Côte de Beaune, owned solely by Rougeot Père & Fils. In 2016, Pierre-Henri Rougeot broke away from his father Marc's supermarket-supply business and converted the 12.6 hectares, spread across plots in Meursault, Volnay and Pommard, to biodynamic viticulture. Work is done by hand, with only minimal use of tractors. His credo: there can be no good wine from bad soil.
Grape variety and vinification
Pinot Noir, un-destemmed going into fermentation. Rougeot ferments whole clusters spontaneously with his own native yeasts. Ageing takes place in 228-litre Burgundy barrels with a deliberately low proportion of new oak, in 18th-century cellars originally built for the Hospices de Beaune. No sulphur is added throughout ageing; whether any is added at bottling depends on the vintage. The wine is neither fined nor filtered.
On the palate
Red forest berries and delicate cherry, alongside a spicy herbal note. Juicy and clear in flow, finely structured, with mineral freshness on the finish.
Food pairing suggestions
With roasted duck breast, boeuf bourguignon, rosé-roasted saddle of lamb or mature Comté.
Special features
Monopole vineyard, aged without added sulphur, unfined and unfiltered. The estate's diagonally striped labels identify the cuvées aged without sulphur.
