About this wine
Character
A Puligny-Montrachet of the lean, saline kind: lemon zest and white blossom, backed by a chalky texture that gives the wine structure. Jacqueline Collardot and her son Matthieu work towards clarity and precision rather than richness; there's no buttery toast or vanilla here. The magnum format gives it time.
Terroir and origin
Domaine Thomas-Collardot sits at the heart of Puligny-Montrachet and farms just 2.5 hectares. The vines trace back to Jacqueline Collardot's grandfathers, Henri Chavy and Maurice Thomas; her father Pierre Thomas tended them until 1992, after which they were leased to cousins. In 2010, Jacqueline Collardot took the vineyards back and trained at the CFPPA in Beaune. The estate includes parcels in Les Enseignères, Les Nosroyes and Hameau de Blagny (1er Cru).
Grape variety and vinification
Chardonnay, handled with a light touch in the cellar: gentle pressing, 24 hours of settling, maturation in used 228-litre pièces that have already held two to four previous vintages. As a village wine, it ages sixteen months on fine lees. It is not fined, only lightly filtered, and barely sulphured.
On the palate
Dry from start to finish, with vibrant acidity and a fine grain. Citrus fruit and lime zest stay sharply defined, the finish drawing out chalky and saline. 13.5% ABV carries the wine without weighing it down.
Distinctive features
The family has only vinified its own grapes since 2015; before that, the grapes went to négociants. Matthieu joined in 2018. The estate has been organic-certified since 2021. Around 10,000 bottles a year, a small share of which is bottled as magnum.
