About this wine
Character
A mature white wine that needs no loud fruit. At 12.0% vol. it stays lean, carried by structure: austere texture, taut acidity, a quiet savoury note that only bottle age can give. A wine for listeners, not for quick effect.
Terroir and origin
Quinta da Lomba lies in the Dão, where cooler conditions let the grapes ripen slowly and preserve acidity. Dirk Niepoort, whose house has been rooted in the Douro since 1842, has for years also worked in the neighbouring Dão, revealing here a fresh, restrained side of Portugal.
Grape variety and vinification
The cuvée combines the white varieties Encruzado, Cerceal and Bical. In the cellar, Dirk Niepoort's credo "the wine is made in the vineyard" applies: hand harvest, spontaneous fermentation with wild yeasts, gentle ageing, minimal intervention. The Garrafeira designation stands for extended ageing before release – the 2016 accordingly reaches the glass late and already matured.
On the palate
Dry and clearly delineated. Dried herbs and hazelnut sit over ripe yellow fruit, a smoky note lingers into the saline, savoury finish. Acidity holds it all together, and the fine texture gives the wine grip rather than weight.
Special features
Niepoort today is shaped by Dirk Niepoort, with his son Daniel continuing the work in the cellar as winemaker. In 2024, Wine Enthusiast named the house "European Winery of the Year". A white Garrafeira made from indigenous varieties remains an exception even within this range.
