About this wine

Character

The Conciso Branco Dão DOC 2022 is a dry white wine from the Dão that seeks its effect not through fruit, but through structure. In the glass it shows a clear, pale straw-yellow with fine greenish hues. The nose is delicately floral and layered: linden blossom, apple and almond blossom, followed by spicy notes of dried Mediterranean herbs, thyme and oregano, along with freshly chopped almonds. The pale fruit stays cool and understated: white peach, sweet pear, yellow apple and mandarin with peel and a fine bitter note.

Terroir and origin

The Dão lies in the warm, central part of Portugal. That a white wine from there manages just 12.5% ABV while remaining balanced is remarkable. Niepoort has been rooted in the Douro Valley since 1842; Dirk Niepoort transformed the classic Port house into a still-wine producer, with dry wines now making up 80% of production. Alongside the Douro, he also works in the neighbouring Dão.

On the palate

Light-footed and precise, with a chalky, linear structure as its backbone. On the palate, grilled corn, pineapple and a salty popcorn nuance come to the fore as the fruit recedes. The saline, chalky, gripping mineral elements practically cling to the tooth surface. The acidity is invigorating, firm and very well integrated.

Distinctive features

An experiential wine for the mouthfeel: texture and tactility take precedence over aromatics. Niepoort has farmed organically since 1999; hand harvesting, spontaneous fermentation with wild yeasts and careful ageing define the house's approach. In 2024, Niepoort was named "European Winery of the Year" by Wine Enthusiast.
