About this wine
Character
A lean, lightly built red wine from the Douro Valley that draws its tension from acidity and schist rather than richness: 11.5% Vol. alcohol, a clear contour, great drinkability.
Terroir and origin
The grapes grow on the steep schist terraces of the Douro, a UNESCO World Heritage landscape. The schist stores the heat of the day and releases it at night, while the steep slopes force the roots deep into the rock. Niepoort has been farming organically since 1999 and now cultivates its vineyards biodynamically; low yields and an early harvest ensure freshness.
Grape variety and vinification
A blend of Tinta Amarela, Touriga Franca and Tempranillo (Tinta Roriz) from old vines, the foundation of the Bioma range. Hand harvest, spontaneous fermentation with wild yeasts, traditional foot-treading in granite lagares, followed by gentle ageing in a large wooden foudre at Quinta de Nápoles.
On the palate
In the glass, transparent ruby red with violet reflections. On the nose, dark forest berries, dried herbs and fine spice over a cool schist note. The attack is juicy, the acidity vibrant, the tannin fine-grained; the wine remains lean and clear through to the finish.
Food recommendations
Pairs well with braised lamb and braised rabbit, with fine game dishes and mushroom risotto, as well as with Arroz de Pato, the Portuguese duck rice dish. It also holds its own with air-dried ham and mature sheep's cheese.
Special features
Niepoort has been rooted in the Douro since 1842. Dirk Niepoort steered the port house towards still wines, which today account for 80% of production, while his son Daniel oversees the cellar as winemaker. The estate cultivates over 80 hectares. In 2024, Wine Enthusiast named the estate "European Winery of the Year".
