About this wine

Character

A dry Douro of cool stature: 13.0% vol., vibrant acidity, depth rather than power. Dirk Niepoort seeks out the filigree, age-worthy side of the Douro's indigenous varieties, and the 2018 shows it with poise and length.

Terroir and origin

The Quinta de Nápoles lies in the Douro Valley, whose dramatic terraces form part of the UNESCO World Heritage. On its steep slopes stand vines up to 100 years old, rooted in schist that stores the day's heat and releases it at night; the steepness forces the roots deep into the rock. Niepoort has farmed organically since 1999 and today manages the vineyards biodynamically.

Grape variety and vinification

A blend of Tinta Amarela, Touriga Franca and Tinto Cão. Hand-harvested early enough to preserve freshness, then the traditional foot-treading of the grapes in granite lagares, spontaneous fermentation with wild yeasts and gentle ageing in large wooden vats. The still wines mature on-site at the Quinta de Nápoles.

On the palate

Deep ruby red with violet highlights. On the nose, ripe dark berries, wild herbs, fine spice and a cool schist note. The wine flows silkily, the tannin is fine-grained, the acidity fresh; the fruit stays concentrated without becoming broad.

Food recommendations

With braised leg of lamb, beef stew and pan-seared beef fillet, as well as with roast pheasant, porcini risotto or mature hard cheese.

Special features

The house has existed since 1842; five generations after Franciscus Marius van der Niepoort, Dirk Niepoort steered the estate towards still wines, which today make up 80% of production. His son Daniel, as cellar master, leads the work in the cellar. In 2024, Wine Enthusiast named Niepoort "European Winery of the Year".
