A second love, found in the granite mountains south of Viseu. Niepoort in the Dão – these are cool nights, old vines and wines of remarkable freshness. In 2012, Dirk Niepoort acquired Quinta da Lomba and began to explore the potential of this underrated region. The Conciso line – concise, straight to the point – embodies his philosophy: clarity rather than power, elegance rather than extraction.
Granite instead of schist
The Dão is enclosed by mountains, sheltered from Atlantic influences and shaped by granite soils. Unlike in the hot
Douro, the grapes here ripen more slowly, retain more acidity and develop finer aromas. In 2012 Dirk Niepoort acquired Quinta da Lomba with its old vines in the hills south of Viseu.
Tinta Pinheira, Touriga Nacional and Encruzado: these indigenous varieties find ideal conditions here for wines with moderate alcohol and precise structure.
Conciso: to the point
The name says it all: "conciso" means concise, succinct, to the point. The
Conciso Branco from Encruzado impresses with its mineral freshness, the
Nat Cool Tinto Terra’s do Dão from Jaen, Tinta Pinheira and Alfrocheiro with sour cherry, rosehip, a hint of red pepper and crisp acidity at just 12% alcohol. No oak monsters, no over-extraction: wines that let their terroir speak.
Cool elegance
As in the Douro, Niepoort relies on biodynamic farming and minimal intervention in the Dão. Spontaneous fermentation, used barriques, time rather than technology. The Serra da Estrela sends fresh winds, the nights are cool and the ripening period long. The result is wines that compete with the best Burgundies for finesse, at a fraction of the price. With the next generation, embodied by his son Daniel, continuity is assured.
