About this wine
Character
The Relats de Viticultors Brut Nature 2019 is a lean, uncompromisingly dry sparkling wine from Catalonia's Cava region. With no dosage, there's no cushion to soften the minerality: chalk and limestone carry the wine, while the fruit takes a back seat.
Terroir and origin
Recaredo farms 50 hectares of its own vineyards biodynamically, on the right bank of the Bitlles river in the hilly landscape of the coster del Bitlles. The soil is distinctly chalky; the white stones between the vine rows give it away at first glance.
Grape variety and vinification
Xarello and Macabeu, aged through classic bottle fermentation. Recaredo seals its bottles with natural cork and disgorges by hand, without freezing the neck: the cellar master releases the lees sediment solely through the movement of the bottle. Here, Brut Nature means zero grams of dosage, and the wine is bottled at 11.5% ABV.
On the palate
The nose shows ripe yellow fruit, persimmon, apricot and mirabelle plum, alongside lemon juice, grapefruit and orange peel, a touch of sea spray and oyster shell, and slowly emerging dried herbs, tarragon and bay leaf. In the background, orange blossom and jasmine tea. The palate opens dry and linear, the mousse stays restrained and leads, sip by sip, to a long finish shaped by chalk and limestone.
Food pairings
With scallop carpaccio with lemon gel and seaweed salad, with pea salad with mint and Jamón Ibérico, and with pointed cabbage tacos with roasted celery, feta and date barbecue sauce.
Special features
The estate has produced exclusively Brut Nature since 1924. Ton Mata, grandson of the founder, launched Corpinnat together with like-minded growers in 2019; its rules allow only estate-grown grapes, hand harvesting, native grape varieties and at least 18 months of lees ageing.
