About this wine
Character
A red wine that combines deep fruit and southern spice with a freshness already apparent on the nose. Black cherry, blackberry and plum sit alongside garrigue, pepper and bay leaf, underscored by graphite, cool crushed stone, black elderberry and a touch of blood orange. In the glass, a bright garnet red with a slight rim of lightening.
Terroir and origin
Montner lies on the north-facing slope of the Força Real, sheltered from the scorching Mediterranean sun. Marjorie and Stéphane Gallet farm 25 hectares there across twenty plots. The schist soils of clay and silica store water in their vertical structure for dry periods, while the altitude, up to 400 metres, ensures cool nights. The estate's average yield is 15 hectolitres per hectare.
Grape variety and vinification
A blend of Carignan, Grenache, Syrah and Lladoner Pelut from old plots on weathered schist, planted between 1911 and 1944. Marjorie Gallet ages the wine in tonneaux, with a small proportion of new barrels.
On the palate
Shaped by old Carignan vines, the wine is lively and clear, juicy and agile, with an impressive acid structure and fine tannin. The old vines lend a vibrant, fresh minerality that runs through the dark, crisp fruit. The texture is silky, the wine full-bodied and berry-toned, spicy with hints of tobacco, liquorice and bay leaf.
Distinctive features
Roc des Anges is named after a white quartz rock in the vineyards. Marjorie Gallet learned the fundamentals of biodynamic work from Gérard Gauby; since 2008 she has run the estate together with Stéphane. The schist terraces are farmed biodynamically, with some of the vines around 100 years old.
