About this wine
Character
An austere, sinewy white wine that draws its impact from salt and texture rather than fruit richness. Marjorie and Stéphane Gallet always call it their "rock wine".
Terroir and origin
Montner lies on the northern slope of Força Real, sheltered from the scorching Mediterranean sun. The plots reach up to 400 metres in altitude, where nights stay cool. The subsoil is a schist of clay and silica; the rock's vertical structure retains water for dry periods. The estate's average yield is 15 hectolitres per hectare.
Grape variety and vinification
100% Grenache Gris from a plot planted in 1954 on pure schist. The Gallets farm their terraces biodynamically, and the white wines age in neutral barrels. 12.5% vol., vinified dry.
On the palate
The nose is initially reserved and only opens up with time in a large glass: wet stones, red apple skin and white blossom, followed by dried herbs, seashells and lemon leaf. On the palate, a mouth-watering saline minerality, along with the grippy texture of ground rock dust, supported by noble phenolics. The acidity is beautifully integrated, carrying the wine into a saline, ethereal, cool finish.
Food pairings
Young zucchini salad with olive oil, lemon, fennel pollen and mint, turbot fillet in grapefruit beurre blanc with sea samphire and potato risotto, or roasted kid goat with Mediterranean herbs and young garlic.
Special features
Marjorie Gallet learned biodynamic viticulture from Gérard Gauby in Calce and went independent in 2003. She named the estate Roc des Anges after the white quartz rock that rises from the black schist of her vineyards. Stéphane Gallet has worked alongside her since 2008.
