About this wine
Character
The Meursault Sous la Velle AOC 2022 by Rémi Jobard is a dry Chardonnay from a village vineyard in Meursault, here in magnum format. It relies on cool fruit, fine texture and an oak spice that stays in the background.
Terroir and origin
The Jobard family has been growing wine in Meursault for a long time, with the earliest records dating its origins to the 16th century. The domaine farms nine hectares, of which more than two and a half hectares are village vineyards in Sous la Velle, Chevalières, Narvaux and En Luraule. Synthetic fertilisers and pesticides disappeared from the vines in 1994, followed by herbicides in 1998. The rows are grassed over, worked by hand and unfertilised, while cordon pruning keeps yields in check.
Grape variety and vinification
Single-varietal Chardonnay. Two large presses work at the lowest possible pressure: grapes picked in the morning are pressed for at least six hours, those picked in the afternoon often for twelve hours overnight. This way, only the finest must reaches the cellar, free of bitter compounds. Ageing lasts around 15 months in 600-litre casks from cooper Stockinger, made of French, Austrian and Slavonian oak, with only a fifth renewed each year. The wine then rests in tank. It is not filtered; its stability comes from ageing through two winters.
On the palate
Linear and focused, with a silky texture and cool fruit. Yellow apple and lemon zest meet white blossom and a smoky minerality. The finish is long, taut and saline.
Food pairings
With pan-fried turbot in white wine sauce, veal chop with morels or aged Comté.
Special features
In magnum, the Chardonnay evolves more slowly than in a standard bottle. The long pressing and the absence of filtration give it its crystalline clarity.
