About this wine
Character
This Pinot Noir from Burgundy shows ripe red fruit with firm connective tissue, rich in extract yet cool. Sinewy, taut, athletic by nature, balancing high vibration with profound bass.
Terroir and origin
Les Vignes-Rondes lies above the village of Monthelie, mid-slope, on the typical limestone-clay soils, and is a comparatively cool site. The domaine is based in Meursault and has worked without artificial fertilisers and pesticides since 1994, and without herbicides since 1998. The vine rows are worked by hand and cover-cropped, while cordon pruning limits yields.
Grape variety and vinification
Pinot Noir, fermented 100% with whole clusters. The wine matured for one year in barrel; Rémi Jobard uses 600-litre foudres from Stockinger, whose volume slows the exchange of oxygen and holds back the oak's imprint. Before bottling, the wine rested in stainless steel.
On the palate
Silky and supple in flow, carried by fresh yet ripe acidity and framed by firm tannin that gives a satisfying grip. Sour cherry, redcurrant and raspberry stay on the tart side, joined by blackberry leaf and blackcurrant leaf, mild spices and floral notes of hollyhock, violet and a touch of lavender. Consummate and impeccably mannered, yet with remarkable tempo.
Food pairings
Braised heirloom carrots with aniseed and fennel from the oven, pan-fried wels catfish on roasted roots in a citrus stock, or rabbit saltimbocca with cherry laurel and polenta.
Special features
A Premier Cru from Monthelie in a 1500ml magnum, which gives the wine calmer ageing conditions. 13.0% vol., dry.
