About this wine

Character

The Ried Altenberg Jois Leithaberg DAC 2022 is a single-varietal Blaufränkisch from a single site in Jois, biodynamically produced by Anita and Hans Nittnaus. Dense violet-red in the glass, virtually opaque right to the rim. Juicy fruit and cool minerality stand side by side, already displaying depth, complexity and ageing potential at a young stage.

Terroir and Origin

Ried Altenberg is located near Jois on the slopes of the Leitha Mountains, on limestone soils. The vines there average 30 years of age. The Nittnaus family has been cultivating vineyards on the eastern shore of Lake Neusiedl since 1684, today managing 36 hectares situated between Gols and the cooler Leithaberg region.

Grape Variety and Vinification

Blaufränkisch, also known as Lemberger, vinified as a single varietal. The hand-harvested grapes ferment spontaneously in wood, after which the wine matures for 22 months on the lees in 500-liter wooden casks. Dry, 13.0% ABV.

On the Palate

On the nose, blackberry, elderberry, sweet blueberry and cassis, joined by floral scents of elderflower, ivy and rose petals, along with cinnamon and aniseed; leather, wood smoke and tobacco emerge alongside. Juicy and expansive on the palate, yet elegant and multi-layered: polished tannin structure, invigorating acidity and vibrant fruit. The compact minerality and a saline impression are ever-present, offering wonderful drinkability.

Special Features

The estate has been working biodynamically since 2007: diverse cover crops between the vine rows, compost preparation instead of artificial fertilizers, and spontaneous fermentation in the cellar. "We don't make the wine, we accompany it," says Hans Nittnaus. Sons Andi and Martin are gradually taking over the vineyards and cellar.
