About this wine
Character
A dry single-vineyard Chardonnay that favours drive and spice over sheer richness. Young, it still appears somewhat reserved: first flint and an intense imprint of the mineral soil, joined by fine spice from the small oak barrel. In the decanter it opens up, revealing firm pear, delicate citrus, fresh apple and quince.
Terroir and origin
The Bergschmallister vineyard lies on the lower slopes of the Joiser Tannenberg in the Leithaberg region and covers around 0.4 hectares. Here the slate is overlaid with abundant limestone, an ideal site for Chardonnay. Of the estate's 36 hectares, half lie around Gols on warm steppe soil, the other half in the cooler Leithaberg near Jois.
Grape variety and vinification
Chardonnay, single-varietal and hand-harvested. In the cellar, the Nittnaus family relies on spontaneous fermentation, with ageing in a small oak barrel that contributes the spice notes. With the 2015 vintage, the parcel was vinified separately for the first time. 13.5% vol., dry.
On the palate
It grips with great drive, the fruit feels juicy, the spice pronounced. Joined by apple, pear and meadow herbs. The finish is rich in finesse, carried by distinct minerality and a piquant tannic edge.
Food pairings
The tannin and spice call for elaborate cuisine: pan-fried pikeperch fillet, corn-fed chicken with porcini mushrooms or mature mountain cheese.
Special features
The family has tended its vineyards on the eastern shore of Lake Neusiedl since 1684 and has farmed biodynamically since 2007. In 1994, Hans Nittnaus gave the Pannobile brand name, which he had trademarked, to the newly founded Gols winegrowers' association. He sums up his approach as follows: "We don't make the wine, we accompany it."
