About this wine
Character
A dense-fruited, youthfully vibrant red wine, which the winery itself describes as a nobleman. Dark fruit, taut structure, and exceptional drinkability are in perfect balance; for all its power, the cuvée remains remarkably agile.
Terroir and Origin
The hand-selected grapes hail from hillside vineyards on the northern edge of Lake Neusiedl: the Zweigelt from the Leithaberg in Jois, the Blaufränkisch from the Ungerberg in Gols. Anita and Hans Nittnaus cultivate 36 hectares between Gols on the warm Heideboden and the cooler Leithaberg region, certified biodynamic throughout since 2007, employing cover crops between the vine rows and compost instead of synthetic fertilisers. The family has been engaged in viticulture on the eastern shore of the lake since 1684.
Grape Variety and Vinification
Blaufränkisch and Zweigelt, hand-harvested and sorted. The must fermented spontaneously in wood, followed by 20 months of maturation on the lees in 500-litre wooden casks. Vinified dry, with 13.5% ABV.
On the Palate
Abundant juicy, fresh fruit, led by cherry, supported by invigorating acidity and a polished tannin structure. A stony minerality lends grip and finesse, while the finish remains long and enticing. The nose reveals preceding notes of dark morello cherries, blackberries, and plum jam alongside firewood, Mediterranean herbs, liquorice, and a trace of green bell pepper.
Food Pairings
Pairs wonderfully with beef tenderloin with creamed spinach and toasted pine nuts, with savoury filo pastry tart with minced meat, aubergine, and rosemary, as well as with pan-fried polenta slices with mushroom ragout.
Special Features
Hans Nittnaus trademarked the name Pannobile in the early 1990s and gifted it in 1994 to the newly formed Gols winegrowers' association, of which the winery remains a founding member to this day. The magnum format allows the wine to mature at a slower, more graceful pace.
