About this wine

Character

A powerful, dry red wine with 13.5% ABV that showcases both facets of Burgenland: the warmth of the Pannonian climate and, beneath it, a cool, mineral vein. Densely structured, with a firm backbone and a lingering finish.

Terroir and Origin

On the eastern shore of Lake Neusiedl, the Nittnaus family has been cultivating vineyards since 1684, today encompassing 36 hectares between Gols and the Leithaberg region. One half of the vineyards is situated on the warm Heideboden around Gols, the other in cooler Jois. From this combination of limestone and slate soils, the Blaufränkisch in particular derives its minerality and elegance.

Grape Variety and Vinification

The cuvée unites Burgenland's two main red varieties: Blaufränkisch provides spice, acidity, and firm tannins, while Zweigelt contributes softer, juicy berry fruit. The family has been working biodynamically since 2007, using diverse cover crops between the vine rows and compost instead of synthetic fertilisers. In the cellar, the wine ferments spontaneously. «We don't make the wine, we accompany it,» says Hans Nittnaus.

On the Palate

Juicy dark fruit, black cherry and blackberry, accompanied by fine spice, an herbal note, and a hint of cocoa. The tannins are fine-grained and firm, the acidity vibrant, and the finish dry and mineral.

Food Pairings

Pairs wonderfully with roast beef with dark gravy, braised lamb, and game dishes such as venison ragout. Equally well-suited to hearty goulash, mushroom dishes, and mature hard cheese.

Special Features

Hans Nittnaus originally trademarked the name Pannobile for himself in the early 1990s. When eight Gols winegrowers formed an association in 1994, he gifted them the name, derived from «Pannonia» and «noble». The estate is a founding member of this association.
